As I wrote on the blog yesterday, I have enjoyed the various things that have come out of the shoe-throwing incident. I lot of it has been creative and humorous; very enjoyable. However, I read something today that really pissed me off. According to the AP, a Palestinian man from Nablus, Ahmad Salim Judeh, is willing to send one of his daughters off to Iraq to marry al-Zaidi. Not only that, but his clan reportedly raised $30,000 for al-Zaidi’s legal defense as well.
This is so wrong on so many levels. First of all, if a Palestinian family has $30,000 that they’re willing to give away, they sure as hell better be giving it to Palestinians. Second, just because al-Zaidi threw his shoes at President Bush does not automatically qualify him to be a suitable husband. That was just a single act that he did. For all we know he may be a total nut job. And who marries their daughters off to complete strangers? I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t happen anymore.
This man, Judeh, really needs to have a shoe thrown at him. Here’s a Palestinian who is living under occupation, in a city that is the target of repeated Israeli incursions, and would like nothing more than to give his daughter and his money away. This is just inexcusable and shameful. Instead of giving the money for al-Zaidi’s defense why doesn’t he give it to the Palestinian families who’s loved ones are in Israeli prisons? I’m sure they need it more than al-Zaidi.
What’s so sad is the amount of enthusiasm that Arabs have had about what al-Zaidi did. What does this say about the “Arab street”? Instead of this over-the-top jubilation why don’t the Arab masses take collective action, each and every single day, to change the political landscape and actually achieve some results? That way, when someone throws their shoe at the president it won’t be such a big deal.
It’s hearing stuff like this sometimes that really makes me wonder what this world is coming to.
