ba_bandit_white_What could be more enjoyable for your kids this year than a doll resembling an Al-Qaeda terrorist?  It comes fully accessorized too (which is awesome cause that’ll save you money during this financial crisis). It comes with hand grenades, a pistol, an assault rifle and the all too important rocket launcher (awesome, huh?).  And just so you know, there’s a Nazi major figure also.  You know, just to even out the indignation.

The company behind these dolls is BrickArms.  They customize Lego figures but are not licensed by Lego to do so.  This particular figure is from their Minifigs line and the name they’ve given it is “Brick-Arms Bandit Mr. White.” And for you safety conscious parents out there, this doll is not intended for children under 3 years of age. So, please keep that in mind if you want to purchase this for your little jihadist one.

Seriously, what were these people thinking?  Glorifying terrorism and capitalizing on rising tensions?  Probably. This is so not what we need right now.  Not that there’s ever a time for putting out crap like this. And I’m sure these guys are making a killing with this line of figures; “Mr. White” is already on back order.

Lego put out a statement saying “BrickArms is not licensed by LEGO UK to customise LEGO figures and has no links to the LEGO brand. LEGO UK is committed to developing toys which enrich childhood by encouraging imaginative and creative play – and does not endorse products that do not fit with this philosophy.”  I’m glad they think so.

That defines disturbing. Not sure if this image or the first in the series is worse. Did you see that the designer is American? It does seem like copyright infringement on Legos.

BTW, I agree with you that Barney’s would constitute the worst torture out of all those listed. I’d be spilling my sins in no time flat.

    Eid Said,

Yeah I’m glad they think so too. Lego was in the process of shelving their own line of terrorists in their Agents Lego line when this controversy broke, interresting that they didn’t mention that in their press release.
Brickarms doesn’t customize lego pieces at all. They create lego accessories, mostly weapons, and with few exceptions sell existing figure parts manufactured by lego. White Bandit, except the guns and grenades, comes off the assembly line at lego.
In addition to the quotes here Lego UK had made a press release that they were unaware of Brickarms, however this unlicenced manufacturer of Lego accessories negotiated their right to their product line with The Lego Group back in 2007.

Personally I support Brickarms, I don’t think it’s reasonable to pretend that weapons don’t exist in the world. It creates ingorance in our children to the function of violence that they will face in their lifetime and I believe that’s a lot more dangerous than the glorification of terrorism. Having badguys for their lego figures to fight gives them a healthy outlet to process the information they constantly face about what is going on in the very adult world we live in.
