So, the continuing power struggle between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority apparently doesn’t let up even when the issue is the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Hamas set up 16 checkpoints along the way to the Rafah border crossing to stop Gazans from crossing into Egypt and continuing on their pilgrimage to Mecca. Some pilgrims were reportedly beaten at the checkpoints and called traitors. Why? I guess even for Hamas, politics trumps religion. The checkpoints popped up in response to Gazan pilgrims who coordinated their pilgrimage with the Palestinian Authority rather than with Hamas. Saudia Arabia, for its part, only approved the list of pilgrims submitted by the PA and ignored Hamas’ list.
Checkpoints and beatings without IDF involvement. An Islamic movement that prevents Muslims from making the pilgrimage to Mecca. Yeah, leave it to Hamas to embody the essence of irony.
