Zia Ul Haq, locked up in a British maximum security prison for his role in plotting to bomb buildings in Britain, has been stripped of his opportunity to make his fellow prisoners laugh. Ul Haq, along with 17 other prisoners, were taking a stand-up course run by the Comedy School of London. Seriously; this is no joke. Unfortunately, Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, had to rain on their parade and cancel the course.
Why would he do such a thing? What’s the harm of these guys learning to make people laugh? Straw says it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money. But they’ve been giving these kinds of comedy courses for a decade in British prisons and organizers say they “boost teamwork and communication skills.” That’s educational, right? I mean, this guy is going to be in prison for 18 years. I’d rather he learn to be funny and express himself through humor than to leave prison a pissed and bitter man plotting another way to kill us all when he leaves.
In a world where there’s so much hate, a little humor goes a long way. And if these criminals are willing to learn to make fun of themselves then why not? We all benefit. Laughter is the best medicine and I don’t care who’s offering it.
Now, I don’t know if this is for real or not but www.236.com posted what they claim is a copy of Ul Haq’s set list.
Shame on Straw for robbing us of this comedy gold!
